Sermon based on one word!
It’s amazing how some verbose theologians can comment lengthily on just one Bible verse. But it’s nothing compared to a preacher who announced to his congregation that he planned to preach on simply one word. And he gave out his text. He said, “My text today is 2 Kings 5:1 – Naaman… was a valiant soldier, BUT he had leprosy.” And he said, “I’m going to speak today on the word: BUT.”
“Let me give you the outline of my sermon.
1. My first point is this: Everyone has his own particular BUT.
2. Secondly: No man’s BUT is quite the same as another man’s. (Some are bigger than others.)
3. Thirdly: We cannot see our own BUT. Others can.
4. Finally, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall on his BUT.
And his point of application was: “May I ask you this today: what are you going to do about your BUT?”
Now of course there was a tremendous demand for that sermon. “Could I have the BUT sermon, please?”
